The Honkai Star Rail Tier List That Levels With You

We know why you're here. A new patch just dropped, Stellar Jades are burning a hole in your account, and you need to know if the character you've been eyeing is actually worth pulling, or if you'll regret it in two weeks.

This HSR tier list exists for exactly that moment. Every one of the 83 playable characters in Version 4.1 is ranked by real endgame performance (Memory of Chaos, Pure Fiction, Apocalyptic Shadow) at E0 with relics you can actually farm. No signature required to hit their rating. No hidden eidolon math. Just what your pull actually buys you.

Phainon landed in 4.1 and immediately became the new damage ceiling. Sunday still outpaces every other support. Castorice completed the Remembrance archetype and gave it a genuine top-tier team. The meta settled fast, which means pull decisions this patch are clearer than they've been in a while. Scroll down and see exactly where things stand.

What Each Tier Means

Tiers here are about endgame performance, not fun. A C-tier character might be your favorite to play. Build them. Just know where they stand.

SS

Meta-Defining

The characters everything else is measured against. When Phainon exists, every carry gets compared to his output. When Sunday exists, every support gets evaluated against what he provides. There's a real gap below these three. It shows up when content gets hard. In 4.1: Phainon, Castorice, Sunday.

S+

Excellent

Where most of the game's best characters actually are. S+ clears all endgame content and pulls ahead of SS in specific scenarios. The name list tells you how stacked this tier is in 4.1: Firefly, Feixiao, Acheron, Robin, Aventurine, Ruan Mei, Huohuo, Tribbie, Fugue.

S

Great

Genuinely strong, works in multiple team structures, clears endgame consistently without needing eidolons to get there. Includes the best 4-stars at their ceiling and 5-stars that are complete at E0. You're not compromising when you build here.

A

Good

Strong in one or two specific contexts, average elsewhere, or needs a particular team setup to reach their ceiling. Worth building if they fit your existing roster. Not worth chasing as a first investment when better options are available.

B

Decent

Fine for story content and most standard modes. The hardest endgame is where B-tier runs out of steam. Usually outscaled by newer options or carrying a kit that doesn't fit what MoC and Apocalyptic Shadow currently reward. Don't invest heavily, but don't bench them if they're already built.

C

Outclassed

There's almost always a better option for the same role. Not permanent: reworks happen, and new supports occasionally revive old kits. But right now in 4.1, skip these when deciding where to spend resources.

Note: A low placement isn't a verdict on how fun a character is. Some B and C tier characters are great to play. Build who you enjoy. This is just a reference for where they land in competitive endgame.
Version 4.1 April 2026

What's New in Honkai Star Rail 4.1

Two new SS-tier characters and a complete Remembrance archetype. Here's what actually changed, and what it means for your roster.

New Characters
Phainon SS
Phainon (Destruction / Fire) Immediately the best DPS in the game at E0. Runs in any hypercarry team with no special setup. Priority pull for any account without a top carry.
Castorice SS
Castorice (Remembrance / Quantum) Highest damage ceiling in 4.1 inside a full Remembrance core. Requires Trailblazer (Ice) + Tribbie to reach it.
Anaxa S
Anaxa (Erudition / Wind) Strong AoE DPS that fits Remembrance and standard compositions. Solid without being a must-pull.
Meta Shifts
  • Phainon set a new damage ceiling. Feixiao, Firefly, and Acheron are unchanged in strength. They now share the top tier with more company rather than being displaced.
  • Remembrance is now a complete archetype. Castorice + Trailblazer (Ice) + Tribbie gives you a full three-character engine that competes with hypercarry and FuA at the very top.
  • Sunday's dominance is confirmed. The best support for single-target teams, full stop. Pair him with any carry on your account and the result is meaningful.
  • S+ tier is the most crowded it's ever been. Firefly, Feixiao, Acheron, Robin, Ruan Mei, Aventurine: all holding from previous patches. Building any of them is still correct in 4.1.

Top Characters in HSR 4.1: Pull Guide & Analysis

The four characters most worth understanding right now, whether you're deciding to pull, building a team, or figuring out why your clears aren't landing.

SS

Phainon

Destruction Fire 5★ Limited
Phainon

Phainon launched in 4.1 and immediately became the best DPS in the game. Not at E2. Not with his signature. At E0 with relics you can actually farm, his output beats most other top carries at E2+. No specific archetype to match, no mandatory partners. He slots into any hypercarry setup and works.

Best Team Phainon + Sunday + Ruan Mei + Huohuo
Strongest In Memory of Chaos · Apocalyptic Shadow
E0 Value Complete: full kit at E0, no eidolons required

Pull priority: High. If you don't have a top carry, this is the pull. He works fine without Sunday and better with him. The kit is self-contained: he doesn't need a future support to stay relevant. The only accounts where he's lower priority are those already running Feixiao, Firefly, and Acheron. For everyone else, he's the call.

SS

Sunday

Harmony Imaginary 5★ Limited
Sunday

Sunday combines action advance, damage multipliers, and energy restoration in a single kit. No other support in 4.1 stacks all three simultaneously. He pairs with Phainon, Jing Yuan, Dr. Ratio, Blade, and most carry-path DPS characters without requiring archetype-specific investment from his teammates.

Works Best With Phainon · Jing Yuan · Dr. Ratio · Blade · Feixiao
Strongest In Universal: all endgame modes
E0 Value Excellent: core kit complete at E0

Pull priority: High if you own strong carries. Sunday multiplies existing DPS investments. If your Firefly or Feixiao clears aren't hitting their potential, he's the most efficient fix available. If you don't have a carry at all, pull a DPS first. A support without a carry to support has no leverage.

S+

Feixiao

The Hunt Wind 5★ Limited
Feixiao

Feixiao's Ultimate counter mechanic converts every team follow-up into fuel for her own nuke. She's surrounded by teammates who all generate follow-ups constantly: Robin buffs every hit, Topaz procs follow-ups, Aventurine contributes real FuA damage alongside his shields. The composition has stayed at the top of the meta since 2.x because every element actively feeds the others.

Best Team Feixiao + Robin + Topaz + Aventurine
Strongest In MoC · Apocalyptic Shadow · Pure Fiction
E0 Value High: dominant at E0, exceptional at E2

Pull priority: High with Robin. Feixiao without Robin is functional; with Robin she's in a different damage tier. Treat this as a two-character decision if building the FuA team from scratch. For accounts running Phainon or Acheron and wanting a second team, Feixiao is the obvious choice. Her team operates independently and scores well across every endgame mode.

S+

Aventurine

Preservation Imaginary 5★ Limited
Aventurine

Aventurine's shields come with an attached follow-up attack and Imaginary RES shred. He contributes team DPS while filling the sustain slot rather than occupying it. In FuA teams specifically, his follow-up feeds into the overall damage economy. His shields absorb large hits that would kill units outright rather than simply topping HP off after the fact.

Best Team Fit FuA teams · Any single-target hypercarry
Strongest In Universal: all endgame modes
E0 Value Excellent: full value from E0

Pull priority: High for FuA and hypercarry teams. If your DPS doesn't need mass energy restoration (i.e., not a Sunday energy-cycle team), Aventurine's shield value and follow-up damage make him the stronger pick over Huohuo. Accounts without a premium sustain should prioritize him. He works in more team contexts than any other single sustain character in 4.1.

How We Rank Characters

Rankings are built on four criteria. Characters get tested, not theorycrafted into a placement.

01

Endgame Output

Performance is measured in each mode separately: MoC, Pure Fiction, Apocalyptic Shadow. Strong in one and mediocre in the others doesn't rank the same as consistent across all three. Characters that work everywhere rank above specialists, even when the specialist's peak output is higher.

02

Team Portability

How many team archetypes does this character actually work in? Sunday is worth more than a support that only pairs well with one carry, even if that pairing looks better on paper. Account-wide value is the measure.

03

E0 Viability

E0 with accessible relics, no exceptions. Characters that only compete at E2+ or with their signature are ranked at E0, because that's what you're actually investing when you pull. The placement reflects the full cost to get there.

04

Mode Coverage

A DPS that clears one mode and struggles in the others ranks below a DPS with the same ceiling that works across all three. Half your endgame runs depend on a second team, and mode-locked characters make building that team harder.

Who Defines the Meta in 4.1

Understanding the hierarchy helps you decide where to spend your Stellar Jades efficiently:

  • Tier-1 DPS: Phainon (SS), Castorice (SS), Feixiao (S+), Firefly (S+), Acheron (S+). If you don't have one of these built, your first pull should be a carry from this list.
  • Tier-1 supports: Sunday (SS), Robin (S+), Ruan Mei (S+), Tribbie (S+), Fugue (S+). Sunday is the highest-return support investment: works with nearly every DPS and compounds in value as your roster grows.
  • Tier-1 sustains: Aventurine (S+), Huohuo (S+), Lingsha (S+). All three are excellent. Pick based on your DPS's needs: shields, mass energy, or Break synergy.
  • Budget alternatives that genuinely work: Gallagher (A tier, preferred in Break teams over 5-stars), Pela (A tier, irreplaceable DEF shred at her accessibility), March 7th Hunt (A tier in FuA), Tingyun (B tier, best 4-star energy battery when Sunday isn't available).

Best Free-to-Play Characters in Honkai Star Rail 4.1

HSR is more F2P-friendly than most gacha games, and a few free characters are legitimately tier-list relevant. Here's what's worth investing in from your current roster, by role.

Free 5-Stars: Genuinely Tier-List Relevant

Best 4-Star Characters by Role

Best F2P Sustain Gallagher

In Super Break teams, Gallagher is the preferred sustain over 5-star alternatives. His Break-enhancing passive adds real team damage on top of reliable healing, and his energy generation cycles without needing external battery support. Available in the standard pool at 4-star rarity. For Break teams specifically, he outperforms his tier label.

Best F2P Support (DEF Shred) Pela

The DEF reduction on Pela's Ultimate is reliable in a way most 4-star debuffs aren't: it strips existing enemy buffs and applies the shred in a single action, no setup required. Any team that accepts an Ice character slot can run her, and she needs no eidolons to perform correctly. When you don't have access to a 5-star debuffer, Pela isn't a compromise.

Best F2P Energy Battery Tingyun

Before Sunday, Tingyun was the premier carry accelerator. She still fills that role when Sunday isn't available. Her Skill restores 50 energy directly, her Benediction stacks ATK and DMG%, and none of this requires setup beyond keeping her alive long enough to act. B-tier overall, but best-in-slot for carry energy management in her price range.

Best F2P FuA Unit March 7th (Hunt)

March 7th's Shifu mechanic gives her an unusual property: she copies a teammate's element and inherits the same type-specific buffs your FuA supports are already generating. The investment you made for Feixiao or Topaz directly boosts her without any extra setup. An A-tier follow-up attacker who's been available since day one of the game.

Best F2P Speed Buffer Asta

Asta's party-wide SPD buff stacks with Ruan Mei's and other speed-modifying effects rather than overwriting them, which makes her output in triple-speed compositions disproportionately high. The Fire resonance requirement narrows her team fit, but mono-Fire and neutral-element teams get a meaningful speed advantage from her without any 5-star investment. Frequently overlooked, genuinely impactful.

Best F2P Shielder Gepard

Party-wide shields at standard-banner availability is Gepard's main argument. His energy cost is high enough that speed-tuning matters, but with proper substats the rotation is manageable and he requires no eidolons to deliver full coverage. Not Aventurine, and he doesn't pretend to be. For accounts still building toward premium sustain options, Gepard holds the line.

Best Budget Team: No Limited 5-Stars Required

This team clears all story content and is competitive in mid-difficulty endgame. Every character is obtainable without pulling on a limited banner:

DPS Trailblazer (Imaginary) Free via Path missions
Support Pela 4★ Standard pool
Support Tingyun 4★ Standard pool
Sustain Gallagher 4★ Standard pool

Natural upgrade path: replace Tingyun with Sunday when available, and Trailblazer (Imaginary) with a limited DPS as your roster grows. This team scales naturally, so you won't be starting over.

HSR Reroll Tier List: Best Characters for New Accounts

Starting fresh or targeting a specific character from the beginning? Here's what the reroll meta looks like in 4.1: which standard 5-stars are worth targeting and which limited characters deserve your first Stellar Jades.

Should You Reroll in Honkai Star Rail?

HSR gives new accounts a lot upfront: guaranteed standard 5-star on the beginner banner, a free limited 5-star selector through story missions, and enough starting Stellar Jades to approach soft pity on a limited banner. You're not starting from zero. The real question isn't whether to reroll. It's which standard banner target is worth settling for versus worth looping for.

Best Standard Banner 5-Stars for a New Account

S Tier: Top Reroll Target Bronya

The best standard banner support in the game. Action advance and DMG% buff in a single kit, she pairs with every DPS archetype from day one through endgame. Gets outscaled by Sunday in direct comparison, but Sunday costs limited pulls. If you're targeting one standard 5-star first, Bronya is the correct answer. Don't keep rerolling if you land her.

A Tier: Best Standard DPS Clara

The best standard DPS for a new account. Her FuA counter mechanic is easy to execute, synergizes with March 7th (Hunt), and handles story and early endgame cleanly with minimal farming. Outscaled at the ceiling by limited FuA carries, but genuinely competitive in mid-tier endgame when built, and costs zero limited pulls to obtain.

A Tier: Best Standard Sustain Gepard

Party-wide shields at standard rarity. Gets replaced by Aventurine or Fu Xuan eventually, but as a sustain who requires zero limited pulls, Gepard holds teams together while premium options are saved for. Best reroll pick for players who want early-game survivability and plan to pull a carry on their first limited banner.

B Tier: Functional, Not Priority Himeko · Welt · Bailu · Yanqing

All four are usable, none are strong enough to justify burning multiple reroll attempts. Himeko sees niche use in The Herta compositions. Bailu and Welt are quickly outscaled. Yanqing requires dedicated Preservation support to function. If one of these is your first standard pull, don't reroll. Just save your limited Stellar Jades for the right banner.

Best Limited Characters to Save Your Stellar Jades For

This is the real high-leverage strategy for new players: don't dilute limited pulls on banners without strong characters. The four below are the highest-value limited investments in 4.1. If any are on banner when you're ready to pull, these should come before anything else.

Best Characters for Story Mode and Early Game

Tier list rankings are irrelevant until Memory of Chaos unlocks. Story content in HSR is forgiving enough that any built character clears it. These make early progression smooth with minimal investment:

Honkai Star Rail FAQ: Version 4.1

The same questions come up every patch. Here are the direct answers.

Who is the best DPS character in HSR 4.1?

Phainon is the best DPS in Version 4.1. His E0 output with a standard relic setup is best-in-slot for single-target content across Memory of Chaos and Apocalyptic Shadow. Castorice competes for the absolute ceiling inside a full Remembrance team, but Phainon's universality and lower team investment keep him at number one for most accounts.

Should I pull Phainon or Sunday first?

Depends on your roster. If you lack a top carry, pull Phainon. He stays relevant for multiple patches and doesn't require Sunday to function, just performs better with him. If you already have Firefly, Feixiao, or Acheron built and your clears aren't landing, pull Sunday. His value multiplies with every DPS on your account and raises the floor more than a redundant carry would.

Is Firefly still worth using in Version 4.1?

Yes. Firefly is S+ tier and has not fallen off. Fugue's addition made Super Break more consistent, not less. Firefly + Fugue + Ruan Mei + Gallagher is still a top-four team in 4.1 and clears all endgame content comfortably. She's not being displaced. She's sharing the top tier with more company.

What's the best team for Memory of Chaos in 4.1?

The best MoC team is Phainon + Sunday + Ruan Mei + Huohuo. This handles virtually any modifier due to its raw damage and flexible rotation. Equally competitive: Feixiao + Robin + Topaz + Aventurine (unchanged from 2.x, still top-3 MoC) and Firefly + Fugue + Ruan Mei + Gallagher. If you have any of these three compositions, you're not missing MoC stars.

What's the best team for Pure Fiction?

Pure Fiction rewards AoE damage. The best teams use: The Herta + Himeko + Robin + sustain (current standard), Kafka + Black Swan + Sampo + Huohuo (DoT dominance), or the Castorice Remembrance team for multi-target. Avoid single-target hypercarry teams like Phainon in PF, as his strength doesn't translate to this mode.

What's the best team for Apocalyptic Shadow?

Apocalyptic Shadow rewards heavy single-target DPS with Break efficiency. Phainon hypercarry and Firefly Super Break are both built for this mode specifically, and both clear comfortably. Feixiao FuA is also competitive here. The key distinction from MoC: AS rewards high Toughness reduction, which gives Break teams a specific edge on its boss-modifier stages. Any of the top three compositions will clear.

Is Acheron worth pulling in 4.1?

Yes. Acheron is S+ tier and one of the most complete DPS kits in the game. Her Nihility team with Jiaoqiu and Black Swan is clean, her damage is consistent across modes, and her E0 value is excellent. If she comes around on rerun and you don't have her, pull. The one caveat: she needs specific Nihility supports to reach her ceiling, so factor that team cost into the decision.

Which sustain should I use: Aventurine, Huohuo, or Lingsha?

Aventurine for FuA teams and any team that doesn't need mass energy restoration: his shields and damage contribution are unmatched. Huohuo when your DPS needs constant energy to fuel rotations (e.g., Sunday-anchored teams where every Ultimate cycle matters). Lingsha for Break-adjacent teams where her Nihility path enables unique synergies. All three are S+, so you won't go wrong with any of them. Only pull a second sustain if your team specifically needs what the others provide.

Is Blade still viable in HSR 4.1?

Blade is A-tier in 4.1, playable and respectable, but not a current meta choice. His HP-scaling kit was innovative at release but the damage ceiling hasn't kept pace with newer carries. He works in a Bronya + Pela hypercarry shell and his natural sustain makes him durable. If you have him built, he'll clear content. Don't invest heavily in him as a new account's first limited DPS pull in 4.1.

Can free-to-play players clear all endgame content?

Yes, with the right investments. HSR is genuinely F2P-friendly for endgame viability. Trailblazer (Imaginary) is S-tier. Gallagher is preferred over 5-star healers in Break teams. Pela provides DEF shred that has no 4-star replacement. A well-built F2P account clears MoC, PF, and AS; it requires more rotational precision than a whale account, but the content is clearable. See the F2P guide above for specific team recommendations.

How important are light cones for character performance?

Significant but not critical for most characters. A signature light cone typically adds a 15–25% damage increase over the best accessible alternative. That's meaningful, but not enough to change a tier placement on its own. Most S-tier and above characters function fully at their rated ceiling with a strong 4-star or craftable light cone. The exceptions are characters like Acheron and Feixiao, whose signatures enable mechanics not easily replicated. Those cases are noted in individual character write-ups.

How often is this tier list updated?

Every major version patch, approximately every 6 weeks. We also push mid-patch adjustments when significant meta discoveries emerge (new synergies, community-discovered rotations, unexpected balance changes). The version number and update date are always displayed prominently so you know exactly how current the rankings are. We update on patch day, not two weeks after it.

What characters should I reroll for in HSR?

For the standard banner, target Bronya: she's the best standard-pool support in the game and works with every DPS archetype without needing limited pulls to realize her value. Clara is the next-best reroll for FuA-focused players; Gepard for accounts that want early-game survivability. For limited banners, the highest-value targets in 4.1 are Phainon (best carry), Sunday (best support if you have a carry), and Aventurine (most plug-and-play sustain). Full breakdown in the reroll section above.

What's the best team for story mode and early game in HSR?

Story mode doesn't need a meta team. A practical and entirely free starter composition: Trailblazer (Imaginary) + March 7th (Hunt) + Pela + Natasha. All four are free or standard pool, handle every story chapter through the main Trailblaze MSQ, and Pela's DEF shred carries relevance into mid-game endgame. Don't build around tier list rankings until Memory of Chaos is unlocked. You'll waste resources optimizing before the optimization phase actually begins.

Who are the best characters in HSR for new players in 4.1?

The best limited characters to target as a new player are Phainon if you lack a top DPS, or Sunday if you already have a strong carry. The best free-to-obtain character is Trailblazer (Imaginary), an S-tier support acquired through story missions at zero cost. On the standard banner, Bronya is the correct first target: she supports every DPS archetype and holds value from early game through high-end endgame without a single limited pull spent.

Updated Every Patch: Bookmark This Page

The meta changes every patch. Rankings that haven't been touched since the previous version are useless when a banner is live right now. This list updates the day patches drop, not two weeks after when everyone's already decided.

If it helped you decide on a pull, or saved you from a bad one, that's the point. Check back when 4.2 drops.
