Not the Blade you were looking for? This page covers Mortenax Blade, the Fire Nihility form introduced in Version 4.3. The original Wind Destruction self-damaging DPS has his own page — see the Blade build guide. They are separate characters with separate banners, eidolons, and builds.
5-StarFireThe NihilitySS Tier
Blade reforged into a debuff engine. One Ultimate inflicts Balefire Bind on every enemy (−20% DEF, +30% DMG taken), deploys a Zone granting the team +50% DMG, and unlocks his HP-scaling burst state. From there, ally attacks re-apply the debuff and feed a Charge loop that fires free Follow-Up Skills and refunds energy — the exact fuel Acheron and hit-frequency teams run on, with real sub-DPS damage stapled to it.
Everything in Mortenax Blade's kit scales off Max HP — his ATK stat is dead weight — and everything routes through his 160-energy Ultimate. The loop is simple once you see it: Ultimate applies the debuffs and deploys the Zone, teammates attack inside the Zone to generate Charges, Charges convert into free Follow-Up Skills and energy refunds, and that energy buys the next Ultimate. Outside of that cycle his personal damage is deliberately limited, which is why every build decision on this page is really an energy decision.
BasicHP-Scaling Strike + Taunt
Deals Fire DMG equal to 25% of Mortenax Blade's Max HP to one designated enemy and Taunts the target for 1 turn. Even his filler button is doing debuffer work: the built-in Taunt pulls aggro onto the beefiest Nihility unit on your roster, shielding fragile carries between Ultimate windows while his oversized HP pool absorbs the hits.
25%of Max HP
SkillLocked Behind Infinite Fury
Only usable while Infinite Fury is active, and costs 10% of his Max HP per cast. Deals Fire DMG equal to 36% of Max HP to all enemies, followed by 4 bouncing hits of 12% Max HP each. Outside of Infinite Fury the button is simply unavailable — his turn-to-turn damage is gated behind the Ultimate cycle by design, which is why energy generation is the axis his whole build spins on.

UltimateFornax Ex Corpore
Costs 160 Energy. Inflicts Balefire Bind on all enemies for 2 turns — −20% DEF and +30% DMG taken — consumes 20% of his Max HP, deploys his Zone, and sends him into Infinite Fury, raising his CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG (the exact bonus depends on your trace investment) and unlocking the enhanced Ultimate. One button applies the enemy debuff layer, the team buff field, and his personal damage state simultaneously.

Enhanced UltTenax Per Ignem
Unlocked while Infinite Fury is active: a massive Fire nuke dealing 210% of Max HP to all enemies. On a finished 6,000–7,000+ HP build this is genuine sub-DPS output arriving on a schedule your team controls — the faster your allies feed him Charges and energy, the more often the hammer falls. This is where "offensive support" stops being a euphemism.

ZoneBalefire Field
While his Zone is deployed, the whole team gains +50% DMG, and if another Nihility character is on the field, ally Ultimate DMG additionally increases by 75%. Better still, every ally attack made inside the Zone re-applies Balefire Bind to the targets hit — the −20% DEF / +30% DMG taken debuff effectively never falls off, and each re-application is a fresh debuff event for characters that count them.

TalentCharge Loop / Follow-Up Skill
While the Zone is active, ally attacks grant Mortenax Blade Charges. At 9 Charges, he regenerates 15 Energy and immediately fires a bonus Skill that counts as a Follow-Up ATK. The more often your team attacks, the faster this loop spins: hit-frequency comps convert their own turns into free Mortenax damage, follow-up synergy triggers, and a visibly shorter path back to the next 160-energy Ultimate.

TechniqueOpening Aggro Control
Opens combat with a pre-battle Fire AoE, Taunts enemies en masse, and grants Mortenax Blade damage reduction. A tidy defensive opener: the opening waves swing at him instead of your carry while everyone ramps, and his damage reduction plus HP pool make him comfortable holding that attention.

Ultimate first — his entire kit routes through Fornax Ex Corpore and the enhanced Tenax Per Ignem. Talent and Skill next in either order, since both feed the follow-up loop's output. Basic ATK last as always; the Taunt utility doesn't care about levels.
The one genuine argument in his build is the Link Rope: guides split roughly down the middle between Energy Regen, which shortens the 160-energy Ultimate cycle directly, and HP%, which leans on the Charge loop's 15-energy refunds (and his signature's turn-start energy) to cycle instead. Our take: on a non-signature light cone, the Energy Regen rope is the safer default; with Reforged in Hellfire equipped, HP% becomes very defensible. His sheet CRIT Rate looks low at 68–70%, but Infinite Fury's bonus carries it to roughly 90–100% when it matters — don't over-invest body rolls chasing a bigger sheet number.

#1
Reforged in Hellfire
His signature. Raises Max HP by 30–60% depending on superimposition — a colossal chunk of his one scaling stat — restores 20 Energy at the start of his turn to accelerate the 160-cost Ultimate, and makes his Skill inflict Purgatory for 2 turns: enemies take 30% more CRIT DMG and 30% increased DMG from the wearer. Roughly a 17% step over the next-best option.

#2
Lies Dance on the Breeze
The strongest borrowed 5-star, benchmarking around 112% of the baseline. If it's already glued to Hysilens in another Nihility team, don't feel obligated to move it — the options below close most of the gap.
5-star alt
#3
Resolution Shines As Pearls of Sweat
The 100% baseline in most comparisons. Layers a second DEF-reduction debuff on top of Balefire Bind, and its stats sit comfortably on a debuffer who also wants to hit hard.

#4
Before the Tutorial Mission Starts
The consensus F2P pick at S5. It regenerates Energy when the wearer hits DEF-reduced enemies — and Mortenax Blade personally guarantees every enemy on the field is permanently DEF-reduced. On a unit bottlenecked by a 160-energy Ultimate, a free always-on energy engine beats raw stats.

A serviceable 5-star stand-in at roughly 96% of baseline. Take it if it's sitting unused; don't chase it.

Another workable Nihility 5-star if your box is thin. At the budget end, It's Showtime at S5 is the remaining fallback worth mentioning if you've already raised it for another debuffer.

Cavern Sets
1
Divine-Querying Master Smith
Built for him — the cavern set added in 4.3 alongside his release, and the unanimous best-in-slot. The 2-piece grants +12% Max HP. The 4-piece grants +28% CRIT DMG against DEF-reduced enemies — permanently live once Balefire Bind is up — and applies the team-wide "Comburent" effect for +15% DMG. It is the rare set that buffs both his personal output and everyone else's at the same time; nothing else does both jobs.

2
Longevous Disciple (2pc) + Divine-Querying Master Smith (2pc)
The transitional double-HP setup while you farm the full Master Smith set: two +12% Max HP bonuses stacked. You lose the CRIT DMG payoff and the team Comburent buff, but the HP floor keeps his Ultimate and follow-up Skills respectable in the meantime.

3
Pioneer Diver of Dead Waters
A stopgap crit set if Master Smith substats refuse to cooperate — its debuff-conditional bonuses are always active around him, since his own kit guarantees enemies stay debuffed. Strictly a bridge, not a destination; it leaves his HP scaling on the table.

Planar Ornament Sets
1
Sprightly Vonwacq
The cycling pick, favored by Game8 and most guides. Energy Regen Rate feeds the 160-energy Ultimate directly, and the opening action advance gets the first Fornax Ex Corpore — and therefore the first Balefire Bind and Zone — online sooner. On slower teams that struggle to spin his Charge loop, this is the difference between two Ultimates and three in a fight.
2-piececycling pick
2
Bone Collection's Serene Demesne
The stats pick, championed by Icy Veins. Max HP plus a CRIT DMG bonus conditional on a high HP total — a threshold any finished 6,000–7,000+ HP Mortenax build clears without trying. Bigger Tenax Per Ignem nukes and follow-ups, at the cost of slower Ultimate cycling on teams that don't feed him Charges quickly.
2-piecestats pick
The ornament split is genuine — sources divide roughly evenly, and both options are defensible. Run Vonwacq if Ultimate uptime feels sluggish; switch to Bone Collection once your team's hit frequency keeps his energy loop comfortable on its own.
Best Teams for Mortenax Blade
Mortenax Blade is closer to a system than a character: the Ultimate debuffs everything, the Zone buffs everyone, and ally attacks pay him back in Charges. That makes him near-universal — the review consensus lands on "works with essentially everything", with a small asterisk for Elation teams, whose self-contained economy leaves him the least room. He rates SS on our Version 4.4 tier list. Below are the compositions where he's at his best.
Debuff frequency is the whole game for Acheron, and Mortenax Blade is widely regarded as her strongest Nihility teammate by a distance. Balefire Bind lands on every enemy off his Ultimate, then the Zone re-applies it each time an ally attacks — a continuous drip of debuff events feeding her stacks. Welt fills the second Nihility slot, switching on the Zone's +75% ally Ultimate DMG, which Acheron's Ultimate enjoys more than anything else in the game. Permansor Terrae sustains without disturbing the rotation.
Ashveil's relentless attack frequency spins the 9-Charge loop at maximum speed, converting follow-ups into free Mortenax Skills — which are themselves Follow-Up ATKs, feeding the same buffs — and a steady stream of 15-energy refunds. Robin amplifies the whole follow-up ecosystem; Tribbie is the alternative amp slot. Hyacine or Permansor Terrae holds the sustain seat.
The premier home for the Fate collab duo. Gilgamesh and Saber both run enormous energy pools, making Huohuo's percentage-based energy restoration near-mandatory — and Mortenax Blade supplies the debuff layer both kings convert into damage, while his own Ultimate cycling benefits from the same energy support. Three heavy hitters, one field of permanently shredded enemies.
04 · Generalist FlexTemplate — swap the carry freely
Shown with Feixiao, but this row is really a template: DEF shred, +30% DMG taken, and a +50% DMG Zone are element-agnostic, so Castorice, Evanescia, or nearly any premium carry slots straight in. The one archetype where he's less at home is Elation, whose internal Punchline economy already occupies the space he'd amplify.
The 4.4 AoE configuration: Welt's Companion status flips Himeko • Nova into Decimation mode for team-wide CRIT DMG, and the comp's dense hit count — Mortenax's follow-up loop included — recharges her free Assists while his debuffs and Zone inflate every beam volley. His Charge loop loves her hit-heavy Ultimate right back.

Eidolons
Three eidolons actually change how Mortenax Blade plays; the rest are the usual incremental fare. Rows below are labeled by what they do, and the community verdicts are unusually clean: E1 beats his signature light cone in value per pull, and E2 is the dream upgrade for Ultimate-centric teams.
E1
Teamwide RES Shred + Longer Fury
While his Zone is active, enemies suffer −20% All-Type RES for the entire team's benefit, and Infinite Fury's countdown is delayed, stretching his enhanced state across more of the fight. This is the consensus best-value purchase in his entire vertical — a permanent, build-free damage bonus for all four slots — and every source we tracked ranks it ahead of pulling his signature light cone.
Best ValueE1 > S1
E2
Ally Ultimates Become Follow-Ups
Ally Ultimates count as Follow-Up ATKs, the team gains +75% Follow-Up DMG, and his Charge requirement drops from 9 to 7. The implications compound: Ultimate-heavy teams start feeding follow-up synergies, his own loop spins faster on fewer hits, and Acheron compositions in particular get a transformative amount of extra juice. The signature whale upgrade for anyone running him in Ultimate-centric teams.
Acheron TeamsLoop Accelerator
E6
Enhanced Ultimate ×150% + Defensive Charging
The multiplier on his enhanced Ultimate is multiplied by 150%, and he now gains Charges from taking damage as well as from ally attacks. At this point the "sub-DPS" label stops being modest: Tenax Per Ignem swings like a main carry's burst, and even enemy aggression — which his Taunts actively invite — feeds the loop. Strictly for dedicated accounts.

Frequently Asked Questions
They are two entirely separate playable characters. Blade is the original Wind Destruction self-damaging DPS. Mortenax Blade is his new form, introduced in Version 4.3 — a Fire Nihility debuffer and offensive support whose entire kit scales off Max HP. Owning one gives you nothing toward the other: separate banners, separate eidolons, and completely different builds and roles. If you're here for the Wind DPS, head to the Blade build guide.
He's a debuffer and offensive support with genuine sub-DPS output — think of the damage as a bonus stapled to the utility, not the reason you field him. His Ultimate inflicts Balefire Bind on all enemies (−20% DEF, +30% DMG taken) and deploys a Zone granting the team +50% DMG, while his 210%-of-Max-HP enhanced Ultimate and Charge-fed Follow-Up Skills add real personal numbers on top. Build him like a hybrid: crit and HP for himself, speed and energy so the debuffs never lapse.
No. Reforged in Hellfire is excellent — roughly a 17% step over the next option, with Max HP, turn-start energy, and the Purgatory debuff all perfectly tailored — but he is fully functional without it. Before the Tutorial Mission Starts at S5 is the consensus budget answer: its energy-on-hit condition against DEF-reduced enemies is permanently satisfied by his own Balefire Bind, giving a free unit-perfect energy engine. If you're choosing between his E1 and his S1, the community verdict is unambiguous: take E1.
He's widely regarded as Acheron's strongest Nihility teammate by a distance. Her damage engine wants frequent debuff applications, and he supplies them structurally: Balefire Bind hits every enemy off his Ultimate, then re-applies each time an ally attacks inside his Zone — a continuous stream of debuff events rather than a one-time application. Pair them with a second Nihility unit like Welt to activate the Zone's +75% ally Ultimate DMG, which her Ultimate converts better than anyone.
Genuinely contested — guides split roughly down the middle, and both are defensible. Vonwacq is the cycling pick: Energy Regen toward the 160-energy Ultimate plus an opening action advance for a faster first Balefire Bind. Bone Collection is the stats pick: Max HP plus a CRIT DMG bonus his 6,000–7,000+ HP builds always activate, for bigger nukes at the cost of slower cycling. Practical rule: start on Vonwacq; once your team's attack frequency keeps his Charge loop refunding energy comfortably, Bone Collection pulls ahead.
Reviews were unanimous: pull for account value — he was the safest pull of Version 4.3, and that judgment has aged well into 4.4. His strongest homes are Acheron and Ashveil teams, but the debuff-plus-Zone package slots into essentially everything, with only a small asterisk for Elation comps. He holds SS on our tier list. The main caveat is availability: his banner, "Now I Am Become Blade," ran in 4.3 Phase 1 and has no rerun scheduled — keep an eye on the banner schedule.
